Signatures of Gods and Men
Signatures of Gods and Men is an
artbook that documents a few West
African (Ghanaian and Hatian) symbols.
Ghanaian Adinkra are stamped in
cloth and flags. I've chosen Gye
(God), Okuafoo Pa (hard work) and
Dua Afe (love survives).
Haitian Veve are drawn on the ground
during ritual with corn meal, flour or
gunpowder and are associated with
Lwa (Haitian deities).
I've chosen Legba (crossroads) and
Ogoun (Iron).
These specific symbols and signatures are meaningful to me and
speak to certain energy I've incorporated into my life.
Signatures measures 35" x 5" inches open
and 5" x 4" x 3" closed.
Materials include Bogolanfini (mudcloth), West African woven
cloth, manufactured synthetics; cowrie shells, rayon threads,
Calligraphy marker, Higgins Eternal black ink, found piece of iron
and watercolor paper.
Techniques include calligraphy, drawing, abstract watercolor and
quilting.
