Cuyahoga River Stories instructs students in life along the river; including
The Glacier Period, Native Americans, Canal Stories and the Underground
Railroad.   As artist-in-residence, my taks was to incorporate art into
students' curriculum.

Students first met  me in the forest.  I was dressed as Harriet Tubman and
talked to them about my travels..  When we next met, students and I
improvised on a drama titled
The Lost Children, a story of an extended
family of enslaved people escaping along the Underground Railroad.
Because of their work in the drama, students began to understand themes
such as problem solving, overcoming obstacles, working together for the
greater good, facing fears, and questioning injustice.

Using materials left to us by Mother Nature on the forest floor, students
built monuments to honor Harriet Tubman and other American heroes, who
left us this noble legacy.

Below are examples of these monuments.
