The Underground Railroad is very important to me.  The people who risked their lives to escape oppression are American heroes.  This piece, Shh!, is a testament to their bravery and uncompromising pursuit of freedom, even under the threat of death.  But imagine the fear, the dark nights and uncertainty.  Because the runners were being aggressively pursued by slave owners and hired slave catchers, my overwhelming thought when creating this piece was understanding their need to be quiet, "Shh!"

Sponsored by the New York State lottery, in 2002, an image of this piece was projected onto a school bus and traveled throughout New York State educating children about the Underground Railroad.

Controversy - Quilts and the Underground Railroad
Much has been said and written about the use of quilts for resistance along the Underground Railroad, from scholars in the quilt community and others also concerned with the correct documentation of American history.

One day while surfing the web, I came across two essays.  One written by Xenia Cord and the other written by Kris Driessen.   I decided to add my voice.  What do you think?
