Bebop In the Small of Her Back
Cotton, synthetic, corduroy and suede fabric; hand embroidery, beadwork, sequins, metallic thread, machine quilting.
This is what I call "abstract positioning."

I begin with a large sheet of graph paper and draw a lot of shapes that are interconnected.

Next, the shapes are numbered and then traced onto muslin fabric.

The paper shapes are cut out as templates.

The fun part happens by choosing fabric and cutting out the shapes.

All of the shapes are basted onto the muslin with fabric glue and then the raw edges are satin stitched.  Then the whole thing is machine quilted.

Sometimes the end result is a lot of pretty shapes.  Other times, I begin to see things, like this one, the dancer and bebop in the small of her back.
Can you see her?  Her back is covered with beads.  The top of her bikini bottoms are stitched in sequins.  Her legs are golden.
When I noticed the dancer in the middle, I stuffed that shape with cotton to stretch the fabric.  Then I removed the cotton and placed layers of batting inside to give it the 3D look.
