Bitches' Brew
Four patch, redwork; the use of old-fashioned quilting techniques to frame timeless messages. The cauldron bubbles and before politics forced people to identify and align themselves with one religious sect or another, Wise Women reigned and prayed over the marriage of physical, emotional and spiritual health. The Hags, Crones and Witches cackled over cauldrons. They heard the voice of God and prescribed spiritual remedies to the masses. They defined sensuality, sophistication, inner beauty and demanded respect for God in Nature. Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew is creative liberty, and listening to it again, I saw old girl chin hairs, gnarled fingers, smoke and knobby sticks.
Who knows what Miles meant by Bitches’ Brew. Here, it represents long ago witches, the ones who compelled countries to love its citizens back, who brewed harmony, food, shelter and good marriages; who whispered in little girls’ ears, magic about intuition, integrity and right behavior. The quilt becomes a window into the next life.
