THE QUILTING
S
upported by the Multicultural Arts Initiative, Pittsburgh, PA
I began working with The Quilting in May 2007.  A wonderful thing happened…we discovered our shared love of the art form, and our compatibility as a group was born.  Our quilts-in-progress have decided that we should continue working together because of our collective cultural memories, our love of fabric, needles and thread, and our expanded appreciation of art and creativity.
The MCAI grantmaking objective is to enhance the cultural landscape of the region by funding consistently high quality African American and African-influenced arts programming as well as targeted culturally specific arts programming to include Latino, Asian and Native American.  This expanded landscape will reflect a region which integrates these art forms in the cultural fabric of its communities and heightens the cultural conscience of its citizens.
We began our journey by taking a field trip to the Quilt Company to browse and purchase fabric.
NEXT . . . . .
to work, cutting fabric
THEN . . . . .
a little free-flowing creativity with paint
THEN . . . . .
we daydream, design sew, sew, sew. . .and inspire each other with encouraging words and understanding.
Our new home is Bloomfield-Garfield Activity Center.  Large tables and space make it more conducive to spreading out and putting our quilt "sandwiches" together.

Our first home was Abyssinia LLC.  We spent inspirational moments in the Gallery writing poems and then back downstairs to the studio to work.
Our work so far is all by hand.  We’ve discovered a certain calmness through close contact with our creations.  Sometimes, the placement of a sewing machine between the artist and her work is an obstruction.  We will introduce sewing machines for some quilting, border and finishing work.
