April 24 - May 5, 2006
During this residency, both 4th grade classes daydreamed, composed poetry and prose poems, read aloud their creations as well as read established writers such as Nikki Giovonni, Langston Hughes, Tupac Shakur and Eloise Greenfield.  Our hands-on project, My Magic Letter Box -- a decoupaged papier-mâché box -- became their recepticle for 6 month, 1 year and 10 year hopes and dreams.
Teacher, Mrs. Humphries, enjoyed creating her own Magic Letter Box
Students surprised teacher, Mr. Youngblood, by creating a Magic Letter Box for him.  At times, it became difficult to keep the secret a secret.  But students prevailed.

A bit of fun in the middle of writing, fabric, buttons and glue.
We artists are inventors, recorders of history and the hope for tomorrow.
Reading from The Dream Keeper, and Other Poems by Langston Hughes.  Illustrated by Brian Pinkney
In time of silver rain, the butterflies lift silken wings to catch a rainbow cry,
And tress put forth new leaves to sing in joy beneath the sky
As down the roadway passing,
Boys and girls go singing, too,
In time of silver rain
When spring
And life
Are new.

In Time of Silver Rain
